Album by Set It Off
My sister and I stayed up until midnight to hear this when it came out (this is really late for me because I’m old and depressed). I must say the new songs could have been better, but at the same time it takes quite a few listens for me to decide how I feel about a song, so it might just take a bit of time. So let’s get into the review.
1. Music – 8/10
Some of it is unique, but honestly it’s not super amazing. Like what I said about BTS, their music kind of just sounds like the typical rock-punk type of stuff. The extra point above the average is for the few unique sounding songs.
2. Lyrics – 8/10
Again, not far above average save a few songs. They have the basic, “lobe u gurl” song and of course the, “u mean to me, u suk” kind of songs. However I need to give them a point above average for the few songs that are lyrically well done and unique.
As shown in my Lonely Dance review, the song is definitely above average; along with Dancing With The Devil, I Want You (Gone), and Unopened Windows. These songs definitely stood out to me and I can’t get enough of them. They definitely bring the album up out of the average range.
3. Variety – 10/10
This is definitely a strength for this album. Each song sounds different and it even has a beautiful slower song, Unopened Windows, that just adds so much more to the album. There is harder songs as well and it’s just genuinely fun to listen to.
4. Vocals – 9/10
While Cody has a wonderful voice throughout it all, there are small parts in some of the songs that are delivered weird. The part that really took away from this rating is the collaboration song. The female singer they did the song Go To Bed Angry with just sounds… stereo typically punk-emo and the way she delivers the lines just… doesn’t fit the lyrics or the song. Cody has this great voice that’s almost hard but too high to be hard but clear at the same time and it fits the lines very well. Then you have this emo who has a very clear, not hard, punctual (?) voice that just doesn’t fit the lines at all. It would have been fine if they didn’t give her a whole chorus, but here we are, and that how it be.
Other than that, Cody’s voice fits the music so well. He even does well with the slower song which absolutely blew my mind (can you tell I like that song?).
5. Concept Consistency – 10/10
Like I said before, the concept usually is about where the artist is in their life and how they are perceiving it. This album actually does a really good job of showing this. There is a song dedicated to Cody’s long time girlfriend and how he sees her. The songs just take different sides of the band and put it into this really nice album. None of it sounded like it was money grabbing or anything, it all sounded genuine.
OVERALL SCORE – 9/10
This was a really nice album. I’m actually listening to it right now as I write this and I wouldn’t rather spend my time listening to anything else. It is well worth the listen.
